Brother Arther “Doc” Gates is a Spring 1997 initiate of the Gamma Pi Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. A native of Marks, Mississippi, Arther has built a career spanning more than 15 years as a scientist and leader in industrial chemistry, analytical
science, and technology.
Arther’s origin story begins in the rural Mississippi Delta, where he was raised in a household of educators. Education became both a deeply held value and a pathway to discovering what was possible. His fascination with science emerged early, earning him numerous local and state science fair honors for original inventions and research.
That curiosity eventually carried him from Mississippi to universities across the country.
Arther earned a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from Alcorn State University, a
Master of Science in Chemistry from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln, and a PhD in
Chemistry from Louisiana State University. He later conducted postdoctoral research at
the University of Texas at Austin, focusing on nanotechnology and advanced materials
for next-generation lithium-ion batteries.
Arther’s professional journey has spanned agricultural science, specialty chemicals,
pharmaceutical manufacturing, biotechnology, and commercial laboratory science.
Along the way, he has led scientists and technical teams, advanced analytical
technologies, and contributed to scientific programs with national and global impact.
Most recently, he served as Regional Technical Director of Chemistry for North America
at Mérieux NutriSciences, providing scientific and technical leadership across its North
American laboratory network and contributing to global chemistry and innovation
initiatives.
Throughout these different chapters, Arther has been guided by a simple philosophy:
“Once you remove all the excuses, all that remains is what must be done.”
For him, those words speak to the willingness to do difficult things and take ownership
of what comes next.
Today, Arther and his family call the Greater Indianapolis area home. He is a devoted
husband and proud father of two high schoolers. Although his career has taken him far,
his Mississippi roots remain an important part of who he is. They are reflected in his
commitment to mentorship, quiet service, and his belief that achievement carries a
responsibility to help others recognize possibilities for themselves.
Nearly three decades after his initiation into Gamma Pi, Arther remains committed to
Kappa Alpha Psi and the ideals of achievement, service, and Brotherhood. For him,
success is measured by more than degrees, titles, or professional accomplishments. It
is also measured by the opportunities we create for others to achieve.
His story is still being written, but his journey from the Mississippi Delta is a testament to
an enduring truth: where we begin does not define how far we can go
