It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that the Gamma Pi Alumni Association of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. announces the passing of our esteemed Brother Henry Houze Jr., a man of exceptional character, unwavering dedication, and an unparalleled commitment to the values of our beloved fraternity. Brother Houze transitioned from labor to reward, leaving behind a legacy that will forever inspire those who knew him and those who benefit from the impact of his work.
Born on April 28, 1943, to the late Henry and Earlean Houze Sr., Brother Houze exemplified excellence throughout his life. A proud graduate of Oak Park High School in 1961, his academic and athletic talents led him to Alcorn State University on a football scholarship. While an injury ended his time on the field, it could not diminish his determination. He became a prominent student leader and an invaluable assistant in Alcorn’s athletic sports information department.
In the Spring of 1967, Brother Houze’s life took a transformative turn as he joined the noble bond of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. He pledged on a line of three brothers and began a journey of lifelong service to the fraternity. After earning his degree from Alcorn, he pursued advanced certifications at Dartmouth College and Indiana University, further honing his skills in student activities, programming, alumni administration, and fundraising.
Brother Houze’s professional accomplishments were remarkable. He returned to Alcorn, earning a Master’s in Guidance Education in 1982, and served in various capacities, including Alumni Director from 1974 to 1993 and Associate Director of Admissions. His tireless work strengthened the Alcorn community and created enduring connections among alumni.
Upon retiring from Alcorn in 2001, Brother Houze continued to serve his community with passion. As a Youth Development Specialist for the Boys and Girls Club of Miss-Lou, he changed the lives of countless young people. His dedication was recognized in 2006 when he received the Miss-Lou Boys and Girls Club Staff of the Year Award.
Brother Houze’s commitment to Kappa Alpha Psi was exemplary. A lifetime member of the fraternity, he actively served in the Natchez Alumni Chapter, including as chapter president, demonstrating over 50 years of steadfast dedication to our noble cause.
Brother Houze’s personal life was a testament to love and family. He shared a beautiful partnership with his wife, Dorothy Bingham Houze. Together, they raised two daughters and cherished five grandchildren, who were the light of his life.
As we bid farewell to this extraordinary man, we honor his life, which was a shining example of achievement in every field of human endeavor. Brother Henry Houze Jr. will be deeply missed but never forgotten. His legacy will live on in the hearts of his family, the fraternity, and the countless lives he touched.
Rest in power, Brother Houze. As brothers of Kappa Alpha Psi, we will continue to uphold the ideals you so faithfully embodied. YO!
