Port Gibson High School is celebrating its third consecutive “B” rating, a major improvement from the “D” it held just a few years ago. Principal Eddwin Smith, a 1992 PGHS graduate with more than 25 years in education, returned to lead the school in 2020 and has focused on raising both academic performance and student opportunities.
Under Smith’s leadership, graduation rates have steadily climbed—reaching 92.5% in 2024—and more students are excelling on the ACT. The school has expanded programs through partnerships with Hinds Community College, Alcorn State University, and local businesses, giving students career readiness and dual enrollment options.
Smith emphasizes accountability and balance: student-athletes must pass to play, seniors attend college fairs and career trips, and mental health support has been added with a counselor and therapist. Teachers are credited for the progress, while students are encouraged to aim high—whether in academics, athletics, or future careers.
Despite challenges, including the loss of a student and limited administrative staff, Smith remains determined. His goal is clear: take PGHS from “B” to “A” status and prove the school can compete with the best in Mississippi.
